This generation of Fratelli Aprile (the Aprile Brothers) consists of Roberto and Daniele who inherited not only the business but the passion and respect for the land which generously provides for them. They are strongly tied to their region of Sicily and the Irminio River which runs through the whole of Southeast Sicily before flowing into the Mediterranean Sea.
Fratelli Aprile extra virgin oils are monocultivar, which means they are obtained by crushing a single variety of olives all from their farm. Biancolilla cultivar olives are hand-picked and are carefully selected and continuously cold-pressed on their property within six hours of harvesting.
It is a softer style oil with a nice grassiness which brings mowed lawn and basil to my mind. There is a finish of almond and a little spicy/bitterness but it all blends so beautifully that there is no real need to pick out characters...which to me is the sign that mother nature has been honored and showing her best work!
The oil is referred to as 274th Biancolilla because October 1st is the 274th day according to the Gregorian calendar, but it is also the first calendar day according to olives’ rhythm. According to the Apriles, it is the evidence of the great and difficult work of nature, but also the proof of nature's generosity of time. Their philosophy along with the quality of their oil is why I am so grateful to have the opportunity to represent them....they are truly a kindred spirit.
The acidity level of the oil is 0.18% and it is bottled in a 500ml clear bottle.
