The Renegade Lunch Lady

This afternoon our elected leaders are going to continue the national conversation about what our kids are eating in schools.  When the House Education Committee convenes they will begin debate on the reauthorization of the Child Nutrition and WIC act.  This is where the hard work is going to happen and we need your help.

During the debate we’ll hear arguments for why investing in the health of our kids is crucial to the health of our nation as a whole. The statistics are alarming. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have indicated that of the children born in the year 2000, one out of every three Caucasians and two out of every three African Americans and Hispanics will contract diabetes in their lifetimes.

We’ll also hear the argument that we can’t afford to invest in our kids. When President Obama released his 2011 budget, he allocated an extra $1 billion per year to child nutrition.  This may seem like a solid investment, but once I ran the numbers it came out to mere pennies for every school lunch.  Not even enough to buy a fresh piece of fruit each day.

This morning I outline in the Washington Post the need for investing an additional $1 in every school lunch. This investment could guarantee that fresh, healthy foods find their way onto our kid’s lunch trays.

Join me in asking Congress to make this investment in our kids.  It’s up to Congress to ensure that enough money is invested in school food to grow a healthier generation. It’s up to Congress to ensure the future health of America. And it’s up to us to make sure they do it. Please write your elected officials today and urge them to invest an extra $1 a day in healthy school food. This is the work we must do to demand a better future. Let’s do it together. Forward this to others who can help in the fight for better school food.

Our Robert Foley Release Email Newsletter

Every year we release our annual allotment of Robert Foley wines to our email list.  They tend to sell out quickly and this year is no exception.  The following is our email newsletter and below we have updated the wine that we have left.  Follow instructions below to order and sign up for our email newsletter so you don’t miss great offerings of food and wine throughout the year!
Newsletter dated Jan. 22, 2010  4pm:
What better way to start 2010 then with a Robert(Bob) Foley release!   I”m a bit late this year with our annual release as we have been wrapping up 2009 and mopping up the weather in 2010.  Storms have kept our doors closed in Rutherford for the last two days so it’s given me time to focus on our other offerings.
Foley Tanks.jpg Bob Foley on his Howell Mountain Property
Next week we will be offering some romantic gift combinations in both bath and food that will make your valentine swoon…so stay tuned!  My inspiration came from our recent 2 week revisit to Firenze…yes we snuck away without even letting you know!  We stayed in our old home and went to our old haunts.  We were welcomed back with open arms and once again, it was hard to say our good-byes.  Check out our really bad home movie of our adventure into the Chianti Hills…I know Tuscany is beautiful under the sun but under the snow….even more amazing! Unfortunately, it is the only footage we have as every other time I tried to film on Emmy’s flip camera, I apparently did not turn it on…only confirming my teenagers belief that I know nothing. The girls will kill me when they see I’ve published this but I wanted you to see the olive trees in Tuscany covered with snow…nothing like it!
Anyway, back to Bob….as many of you know, Bob Foley has been a friend of mine since childhood.  He and my sister were good friends and played in a band called The Primates.  My parents would drag us to the Yountville Saloon (anyone remember that place?!) for Buffalo Stew while we listened to them perform.  Bob has such a passion for creating music that even at that time he had a very cool studio in his house where The Primates cut their first, and I believe, last album. They were actually really good but for some odd reason, Bob decided to put more energy into his passion for winemaking…lucky us!  Bob has always retained his passion for music…he continues to have his own band and thoroughly enjoys his time touring the United States.  Check it out at Robert Foley Band!
barrels.jpg
Foley wine sells itself.  But, for those of you who want a bit more background on his cult wines, you can simply google him or check out our blog…. knowing that in the time you take to google, his wine may be gone…no joke…this email sells out our allocation immediately…you may just have to trust me on this.
I spoke to Bob’s wife, Kelly, this morning and she said that they are really low because they bottled over 1/3 less of their varietals in 2007.  Their next release is not until the Fall of 2010.  Below is what they have left just for us.
wines.jpg
And…out of our total appreciation of the support you gave us in 2009, we are going to let Foley wine purchases fall under our “complimentary shipping over $75″ offering.  So, if you buy more then $100 of wine or wine and other items combined, you get complimentary shipping! No discount coupons can be applied to Foley wine purchases.
FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE.  Sale is only final when we verify that we have inventory left.  We will notify you  within 24 hours if we can not fulfill your order but we are going to watch this very carefully and take down wine pages once they are sold out to avoid such issues.
ORDERS WILL ONLY BE TAKEN VIA THE WEBSITE.  NO PHONE OR EMAIL ORDERS WILL BE ACCEPTED.
WINE WILL BE SHIPPED BY JANUARY 30, 2010.
NOW PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE PROCESS SO YOU DON’T LOSE OUT….we don’t offer these wines to the public so they are not available for general viewing on our website.  You can purchase the wine by either clicking on the particular wine above and it will take you to that product on a private page of our website OR you can go to our website and type “foley” in the search bar and it will show you all the Foley wines…OR click here to go to the page that lists the Foley wines available for purchase. Once you are in to the Foley wine pages, you can proceed as you normally would through our website.  If you need to go back to a wine, simply type Foley in the search bar and the wines available will appear.  Again, no coupon codes or club member or any other discounts can be applied to Robert Foley wine purchases.
I’m sorry that it’s a bit complicated but it’s the only way we can do it so it doesn’t get out to the public traffic of our site.
If you have any questions, please call Charelle at 1-707-967-1003 Ext. 14.
I hope this email finds you happy and healthy…and surrounded with people you love!
A presto,
Peggy OKelly

WINERY SPOTLIGHT – Robert Foley Vineyards

Foley Tanks

More of Bob’s story for our email list who have received our annual Robert Foley Release Letter:

WINERY SPOTLIGHT Robert Foley Vineyards, Napa Valley, California Benjamin T. Weinberg Benjamin T. Weinberg, JD, MBA, MCSE, is a certified sommelier and author of “Weinberg’s Wine Notes,” published every Wednesday in Denver’s Rocky Mountain News. Contact him at benweinberg@comcast.net, and read his most recent column by clicking on his picture in the Columnists area of the Rocky’s Living section home page: www.rockymountainnews.com/news/living.

Snuggled up to the backside of Howell Mountain, away from the hustle of Napa but close enough to drive in for dinner, lies Robert Foley’s new winery.

It’s the first crush facility and wine cave he’s ever owned, after decades of turning other people’s visions into wine. So as I barged in at lunchtime on a beautiful September day during harvest, I expected he would be pleased with his new domain. But that turned out to be an understatement.

“Welcome to the compound!” he shouted from his seat at the far end of the table, over the buzz of hungry cellar rats devouring their noon meal. “Have a sandwich.” He waved his hand—the one not wrapped around turkey on wheat—in my general direction, then pointed toward the wall at my back, beyond which resided his crush pad. “It may not look like much, but we haven’t finished moving in yet. I’ve got 500 barrels coming tomorrow; it’s controlled chaos,” he told me. “But here I can make the best wines possible. That’s all I’ve ever wanted to do.”

Foley admitted that not everything had gone precisely as planned in the winery last fall, but that spells of cool weather had spread out the harvest, allowing him to fine-tune the facility on the fly. The outdoor crush pad and fermentation area is indeed quite spartan, representing no-frills winemaking at its best, with little investment to this point on nonessentials like landscaping. Or a roof. As it turned out, after 15 minutes, we didn’t even have Foley, who had to leave for the airport. But his nephew Peter Foley and Kelly Peterson-Holmes of Switchback Ridge led me through a tasting of the current releases of both Robert Foley Vineyards and Switchback Ridge (see box) and gave me a tour of the property.

We started with the alfresco work area, which was designed for easy, methodical access during the craziness of crush. Then we descended into the wine cave, a labyrinthine, newly bored tunnel dug deep into the mountain, with tracks laid along the floor to make transporting barrels a more automated chore. Utilitarian, to be sure, but also strangely beautiful when the dark rocks offset the cream-colored barrels as they marched into the distance.

The level of thought, detail, and planning that had gone into the execution of Foley’s vision was impressive. When I mentioned this, he just smiled and asked, “Isn’t that the whole point?” The same philosophy permeates all of Foley’s Napa Valley projects.

Robert Foley Vineyards
“As a Napa Valley winemaker since 1977, I thoroughly enjoy working with some of the fin- est grapes in the world,” Foley says on his web- site. His favorite terroirs combine mountainous, well-drained soils and the exposure of high ele- vations to concentrate aromas, flavors, color, and density. The goal is to make the most expressive wines imaginable using traditional techniques and hands-on care.
Robert Foley Vineyards produces about 8,000 cases a year, divided among six varietals. His own 5-acre Howell Mountain vineyard is a major contributor of Cabernet Sauvignon for the winery.

Italy Comes To Us! Sharon from Garga Restaurant

We have had several visits already from new friends we met in Italy. Sharon started Garga Restaurant in Florence.  I met her through the infamous Elizabetta and ended up taking one of her cooking classes in Florence.  We had such a great time that we decided that it may be fun to have her come out and host some cooking classes at the Olive Oil Co.  So, she and her companion, Mauro, spent four days with us in November and we cooked up a storm!

My favorite was the mother/daughter class.  The idea came to mind a few weeks before Sharon’s arrival as Kaelin and some of her friends prepared a meal that was close to inedible. :)   They normally prepare great meals but…..knowing that they will all be off to college in about 9 months, I thought they might benefit from a little professional instruction.  So, Sharon put together a fabulous class that not only taught us all simple recipes but also reinforced the use of fresh, local ingredients….keeping it simple….and celebrating the meal.

Needless to say, we had a blast and are going to bring Sharon out again…..so stay tuned as we will open the next classes up to our customers.

All About Extra Virgin Olive Oil

EPSTEIN FAMILY VINEYARDS OLIVE ORCHARD NAPA VALLEY

So you have some questions about extra virgin olive oil…everyone does.  I’ve watched the evolution for over 15 years now and it’s exciting to see the progression!  I hope our blog continues to  shed light on all there is to know about olive oil and it’s uses.

When we began in 1994, everyone was bottllng in clear glass.  We, as producers, knew that this was not the best scenario for the life of our oil but consumers demanded it…they wanted to see the color.  One of the first messages that was rampant was to see the oil…if it was green….it was the best.  The funny thing is color is truly not a source of evaluation for an oil…and many California oils that are very green in taste are not green in color.  As we will learn about later in our blog, we analzye an oil based on smell and taste only…this is straight from the International Olive Oil Council.  Anyway, now most people know that good oil is normally packed in a darker glass, protecting it from light.  We seldom have people in our stores asking to “see” the oil….progress!

The American palate has also come quite far in the last 15 years.  Originally, people turned their noses to our amazing Napa Valley early harvest extra virgin olive oils….they were too bitter….they wanted a soft buttery oil.  Now…our Napa Valley oils sell out….more progress!

So let’s start at the beginning and then we will feed you with more information so you are able to absorb it all.

FIRST AND FOREMOST…WHAT IS EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL?!

OLIVE OIL DEFINITIONS

EXTRA VIRGIN Olive Oil – The highest quality of olive oil.

  1. Olives are only pressed once.
  2. Oleic Acid content is under .8%
  3. No defects found in the taste of the oil.

VIRGIN Olive Oil

  1. Olives are only pressed once.
  2. Oleic Acid content is under 2%

ORDINARY Olive Oil

  1. Olives are only pressed once.
  2. Oleic Acid content is under 3.3%

MOST OF THE OTHER OILS….REFINED, POMACE, ETC… ARE MADE WITH CHEMICAL MEANS…OR BLENDS OF HIGH QUALITY OILS WITH REFINED OILS…WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO FOLLOW OUR LEAD…….ONLY EXTRA VIRGIN!!!!

CALIFORNIA STATE DEFINITIONS

California State Senate Bill SB920 in 1997 amended the state’s Health and Safety code relating to food labeling. It required that any olive oil produced, processed, sold, offered for sale, given away, or possessed in this state adhere to the following:

CALIFORNIA Oil labeled California Olive Oil must be made solely from olives grown in California.

NAPA VALLEY, SONOMA, ETC.. Oil labeled with one of the approved American Viticulture Areas under federal law to be made of oil 75% of which is derived from olives grown in that area. ST. HELENA OLIVE OIL CO. IS 100% NAPA VALLEY!

Oil labeled “Estate Grown” must be made of oil 95% of which is derived from that particular estate. ST. HELENA OLIVE OIL CO. IS 100% ESTATE ONLY!

Life after Florence

homeThank you all for your interest in our transition home.   You could probably infer by the lack of my blogging that it has been..hmm…a bit overwheming?  I came right back into our busy season with a million ideas and inspirations.  There are so many stories I could tell about the adjustment of the last month but I will let them surface as they may.  I can tell you that things are different….we are different…..we walk a lot more…..we spend more time with our friends and family…our priorities are different….yes, even the kids.  My girls have asked to cook more then they ever have in the past….they complain about ingredients….lack of flavor….expense….they don’t generate as much laundry….ha….we will see how long that lasts!  Although they have hit the ground running, there is this new bond between us…a knowing…that life is good…life is precious….and life is finite….therefore, simply LIVE.

I have to admit that I was a bit anxious returning home.  I was excited to see everyone but wondered how I would possibly replace a lifestyle that aligned beautifully with my soul.   In reflection,  I realized that our days in Italy were focused on food and family…and the people we met were passionate about their life….whether it was farming olives, owning restaurants, making wine, holding cooking classes, retailing produce….these people were inspiring… they added energy and joy to our journey.   The lifestyle was definitely in alignment with my soul…..but really,  the experience aligned my soul…and my soul, fortunately,  would come home with me.

I learned that we all have the ability to live peacefully.  Places and people may make it more simple or more complex…but in the end, we can find peace anywhere and with anyone as long as it is within us…and although I previously had never lived in Florence nor have any Italian heritage, my journey truly felt like a trip home….I suppose it was because it led me back to my self….ergo I conclude…..home is wherever YOU are.

Anyway…..I  made a deal with myself to live my life in the Napa Valley with the same intention as I did in Florence.  I will seek out passionate people and continue to develop and create products for us all.  I will recognize all the amazing people in our neighborhood…who I’ve overlooked in the past.  I made this pact with myself on the plane headed back to America…..and guess what?  I’m already inundated!  I’m backlogged with amazing people who have entered my world since I returned…so stay tuned….sign up for our blog if you’d like or simply keep checking in….we have a lot of great things on the horizon that I will share in the coming months but for now….check out the lavender harvest and the Kahn ranch.  We are working with the Kahns in the development of our exclusive Napa Valley organic lavender line….it will be the icon of our new brand….Napa Valley Bath Co. Check them out in our harvest blog or napavalleybath.com.

I will be posting product info and pictures soon..we’ve changed our packaging et al and have released all of our new products in both stores.  We will be rolling out products and new blends in the coming months….because what goes on your body is as important as what goes in it!

Thank you again for all of your support.  I look forward to living this new adventure with you!

Ciao!

Until We Meet Again………

I Love This Man...

I Love This Man...June 22, 2009

I cannot believe it is over….our six months….it ends tomorrow.

It seems like just yesterday that I wrote you to tell you that we were leaving…on this adventure to Florence. I can picture myself at my computer at home…exactly where I was sitting….I can see myself typing frantically as I had many things to do to get prepared to leave the next day. I remember my feelings….of excitement…and of fear….anxiety. I did not know that the economy was going to take the dive that it did…I was having problems with our normal first quarter financing….sales were weakening….and I was leaving. I was following my heart..to be with my girls….on an adventure of a lifetime. I stayed focus on the purpose….and I held onto my faith. I knew in my heart this was the right thing to do…but how it would all work out….I had no idea.

There were many challenges when we first arrived as you know. We jumped through many hoops….and there was one day in particular, I remember, that I woke up and had the desire to pull the down comforter over my head…and hide from the world. Although our financial situation was the same that it had always been, we were not getting any financing. We normally lose around $30k in the first quarter so the financing is pretty critical. I have no trust fund or anything of the sort to dig into so we were incredibly vulnerable. I held onto my faith….my belief that if you follow your heart … it will guide you …and everything will be as it should. It may not always be as you planned or as you would like, but it will be as it should be. I micro managed our cash flow…daily….and we had the biggest January in the history of the Company. Hmm….how does that happen when the economy is crashing? I’d love to take the credit but we simply worked as hard as we normally do…..and the stores stayed really strong.

I pulled back on product, worked with my vendors, and became very close to my bank manager. I became very tight with myself….and God. I had to find ways every day to stay strong….keep my faith….so I could appreciate the moments of this journey with my girls. I fought hard against doubt and negativity….I kept my head up high and a smile on my face. I believed. I remember the moment that I truly let go….I was sitting in my favorite church where I go to meditate….and I put it all on the table. I said….ok…..take it….I get it….it’s all yours. Whatever happens, I am ready and will deal with it…..I know that I have the strength and courage to handle what may come so bring it on. I know that whatever is in store for me is what is suppose to be….and that I am not alone. I handed my life over….and He took it. I began to cry….not in sadness….but in joy….in relief. My load was lifted and the real journey began.

I couldn’t possibly go into all the details but I can summarize it all by saying that this has been the most incredible experience of my life. The personal growth of myself, my girls, and everyone who has come to visit has been magical….beyond anything that I could have imagined. I am in awe….and have been every day….amidst the chaos and uncertainty of life…..I’ve been at peace. I have had so many moments of pure contentment…I remember the first time I was sitting on a bench overlooking Florence…it was hidden in the trees so no one was around. I was going to do some reading but I found myself in a daze..staring out at the City. A peaceful feeling enveloped my being…unlike anything I had felt before. I felt so happy…..and a sense of knowing that I was in a state of pure contentment. It was then that I knew where this journey was really taking me.

I look back at the last 15 years and I can now see the path…that brought me here…to me. I didn’t know that I was even lost until I was found….ha……and I am so grateful. Everything is so much clearer now….I know what I want…for the business and for my life. I’ve always had a sense but now I know. And I also have learned how to stay on my path….as I’ve told the girls, life is designed to keep you from following your heart…people and things are put in your way…to distract you and cause you to doubt yourself. Everyday you have to wake up and be aware….not paranoid…but aware that there may be traps in your day. You have to be mindful….of every decision that you make and every path that you choose…..stay in alignment with your being. And listen….you have to listen to your heart…it is your guidance….and to hear it you must slow down. All such simple things that we forget because we are too busy….running too fast…thinking we are in control….working to achieve happiness…..ironic.

So now I really know….my purpose…which I’ve really known all along….just have never been sure. Our body is sacred…..we need to take care of our body, mind and soul in order to achieve pure contentment. It’s really that simple. We need to detach ourselves from the things and people who and that are not condusive to this “end”….it’s nothing new or earth shattering….taught all the time….but now I see my part. So, I will continue, with even more passion, to inspire you…remind you….help you….achieve this.

St. Helena Olive Oil Co. will continue to inspire you to eat well…commune and celebrate around food. We will focus more on awareness…of how food affects your body, mind and soul. We will continue to provide you with amazing ingredients and provide you with information so you can make good choices.

Napa Valley Bath Co. is going to ramp up organically and first and foremost, get you up to speed on the cosmetics/beauty world…and what to look for to ensure you are putting something on your body that feeds it….and it will continue to provide you with products that will give you a sense of well being…and inspiration that will bring peace into your day.

And Peggy OKelly……well I hope to inspire you to go after your dreams…..trust your heart……have faith…..and live your best life…..every day.

Thank you…..for all of your support…..for feeding my body, mind and soul. Your emails kept me going…kept me believing. I am aware of every gesture and every purchase that you have made….I appreciate it more then you will ever know. I value your support and want more then ever to provide you with products that will be good for you….corpo mente e anima.
